The college serves as a feeder institution to the National Defence Academy and the Indian Naval Academy, preparing cadets for the requirements of a future career in the Armed Forces.

Admission to RIMC is offered in Class 8, with January and July admission terms. Admission is through the prescribed entrance examination and subsequent selection stages, not through enrolment in a coaching course.
